Financial wizards Bobby Seagull, Secondary Maths teacher and Doctorate candidate

Bobby will share his personal experience of the financial crisis of 2008 from the trading floors of Lehman Brothers and explore financial derivatives and some of the weapons of math destruction that caused the most chaotic recession in a lifetime.

About Bobby Seagull

Bobby was an investment banking trader, chartered accountant, social entrepreneur and a semi-finalist captain on University Challenge. He is also author of The Monkman & Seagull Quiz Book and The Life Changing Magic of Numbers. He now teaches Maths part-time at secondary school and is researching for his Doctorate at Cambridge University.

Topology and data Ulrike Tillmann, University of Oxford

Topology is the younger cousin of geometry. Euler introduced his characteristic number for graphs and surfaces, and showed us how concentrating on essential  topological features can be a powerful tool when solving concrete problems. We will introduce the subject and explain how modern data scientists have made effective use of it.

Ulrike is a mathematician specialising in algebraic topology and data science. She is titular Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and winner of the prestigious Whitehead Prize.

Jane works in medical statistics. Her research focuses on developing models to answer questions raised by health care colleagues, and patients.
