This highly informative and inspirational enrichment day will offer comprehensive support for students preparing for the AQA A A-Level option ‘Love Through the Ages’. During the day, a series of expert speakers will motivate and inform by delivering fascinating presentations on this central literary theme as seen over time. The day will include a presentation by a leading poet, who will read from and discuss their poetry before taking questions from the audience. The programme will also include an examination session providing invaluable guidance and insights to boost students’ confidence and success. We are delighted to announce that Stella Canwell MBE will be chairing the day.

Love in Shakespeare Nick Hutchison, Actor, Director and Lecturer
Nick Hutchison will explore how Shakespeare presents ideas about love and romance focusing on textual clues, staging issues, and the role of the audience, using examples from Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure and The Winter’s Tale.
About Nick Hutchison
Nick Hutchison is an actor, director and lecturer who has directed Shakespeare’s plays across the globe. He lectures for Shakespeare’s Globe and at universities worldwide and on Jacobean Theatre for LAMDA and RADA.
Poetry reading Michael Symmons Roberts, Manchester Metropolitan University
In this session, esteemed poet Michael Symmons Roberts will read from and answer questions on his poetry. The session will offer students a unique chance to explore the writing of this leading poet.
About Michael Symmons Roberts
Michael Symmons Roberts FRSL is a multi-award-wining poet. He has written seven collections of poetry as well as novels and libretti. Roberts is Professor of Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Narratives of love over time Marcello Giovanelli
In this talk, Marcello will explore a number of texts that offer various representations of love. He will examine the ways in which these texts present ideas about love and how they position their readers.
About Marcello Giovanelli
Dr Marcello Giovanelli is Senior Lecturer in English Language and Literature and Head of English at Aston University. He has published ten books and over thirty research articles and book chapters in literary linguistics. He is Chair of Examiners for A-level English language and Literature at a leading awarding body.
Love poetry through the ages Julia Geddes, Examiner, teacher, textbook author
Julia Geddes will explore the different representations of love presented in poetry. She will consider how to engage with a variety of interpretations and the application of a comparative method when considering how this fundamental human quality has inspired writers over time.

She presents conferences for students and provides support for teachers working with A-level specifications across the country.
